Finally, a Little Luck - The Damn Good Scenario
Okay, now things get a little juicy. This scenario still involves a little disappointment, of course, but Knicks fans should expect that at this point.
New York stays true to the tank but even so the flattened odds keep them from getting the golden goose. Sorry, 14% is not quite enough to snag Zion. Instead they grab a pick in the two to four range.
Try not to vomit, Knicks fans. Also, try not to envision him in a Suns jersey. Good lord.
Remember, though, that the pick does not necessarily need to be used in the 2019 draft. They can, and in this scenario they do, package it along with Mitchell Robinson, Dennis Smith Jr., and maybe Kevin Knox along with one or both of the Dallas Mavericks draft picks in a trade for prime superstar Anthony Davis.
Sorry, Toney Douglas. We had to give your number up. Our hands were tied.
I know, it hurts to scrap the rebuild and send off just about every asset for one guy. It harkens back to the Melo trade, which was divisive in New York to say the least. But listen Knicks fans, this is Anthony Davis. A top 5 player in the league and perennial MVP candidate in his absolute prime. Not only that, but this is not 2011 and the Knicks are not hamstrung by any bad deals. They have cap space.
The Davis-to-New-York hype suddenly has free agent ears perking up across the league. Finally the allure of the World’s Greatest Arena has become enough: Kevin Durant inks a deal to become a New York Knickerbocker, instantly creating one of the most fearsome tandems in the history of the National Basketball Association. Then there’s Kyrie Irving: layup wizard, handle god, and close personal friend of AD. He can’t resist the pull of a return to his New Jersey roots and he too signs up to bring basketball back to the Mecca. The Knicks are back.
Yeah, kind of like that. Only this time they’re actually back and none of them are punching fire extinguishers.
So yeah, no Zion Williamson, and the rebuild has once again been scrapped in favor of a win-now situation. But this win-now situation is one for the ages. With KD yanked from the tyrannical dynasty in Golden State, AD snatched from the LeBron Angeles Lakers, and Boston’s best player ripped from Danny Ainge’s clutches, the table is set for the New York Knicks to return to glory after 45 long, agonizing years.
